A Shaklee Testimonial / John's Story

I have been told that I have one of the most cynical personalities that people have encountered. I never considered myself to be naturally cynical. I do remember that my Mother used to say, “John, cynicism is the cheapest form of humor”. I would respond, “Yeah, but it is still the funniest”. I think I use cynicism not as a way to undermine or distract the listener, but more as an invitation to examine the issue, with all of its serious nuances, using humor as a non-threatening platform.

The time was 1969. My brother and I had hair down to our shoulders, tie-dye shirts, love-beads around our necks, cut-off shorts, and sandals made from recycled tires, and belts that looked like they were made from ox harnesses. Both of us had been in the USA for about five years after moving from Japan. Oh Yeah, I forgot to mention that my mother was Japanese and consequently carried with her the performance expectation for her two sons, like a badge of courage. At this point I was a senior in high school, and my brother was a sophomore.

I should also mention that of the two of us, my brother was brilliant and courageous. In spite of my hippy poser exterior, I was conservative and afraid to a fault. In those days my brother would read books about recreational drugs of choice, act out through experimentation, drive me crazy, and hide from my parents. Did I mention that my brother was brilliant? Like all brilliant people his life experiences were leading him down a path of discovery, where he asked questions like, “What, Why, and How Come?” I listened to him rant and rave about drugs, processed foods, brown rice verses white rice, anti-oxidants, and various other cellular biology based words that were frankly beyond my comprehension. What the hell was he talking about? I concluded that he had simply lost his mind and I promptly entered Engineering School.

In those days I would suffer from strep throat infections every spring and fall. I would invariably start with an allergy related post-sinus drip(although I would never admit I had allergies because of some need to cling to an invincible self image), which would lead to lost sleep, which would turn into giant tonsils, which would result in my throat selling, white…you get the idea. The treatment from the doctors on campus was massive injections of anti-biotics which would in turn wipe out my digestive system.

My diet consisted of highly nutritious tacos from Taco Bell, Double Meat Double Cheese Whataburgers topped off with about a gallon of Dr. Pepper. If I wanted variety I would pick up Pete’s fish and chips. This well balanced diet helped to insure that I had a clear complexion, porcelain white teeth, and great sleeping habits.

My brother majored in Biology and continued his self medicated dietary experiments. He continues to rant and rave about processed foods and our daily consumption of toxic chemicals to this very day.

After graduating from college, my career progressed nicely, while my diet stayed the same. I was traveling extensively internationally. One day in Beijing China, I was so sick that I thought I would actually have to break my diet and eat Chinese food. Out of desperation I went to see a Chinese Doctor. He put his hand on my forehead and then grabbed my hand. He pressed just below my thumb and squeezed it with a force that I did not know was possible. He then gave me a herb based pill about the size of a pin. I instantly felt great! It was my first introduction into the miraculous Witch-Doctory of Dietary Supplements.

Years passed and this extraordinary event faded into memory. Fast forward to the year 2004, where I met my life partner. This magical creature reinvigorated me emotionally to a point where I wanted to be a witness to her life story. This woman had an energy level that was breathtaking, she had a smile that lit up the day, and an outlook that made her appear 15 years younger then she was. As I listened to her story, I was stunned to learn that her mother made a living selling dietary supplements through a company called Shaklee. Here I was again, with someone I loved, listening to evangelistic dialog about dietary science verses processed foods. Shaklee had invested into hard science and used it as a conduit to change people life, and the beat goes on! Oh what the hell, so what if I had to invest into consuming more dietary additives then the elements on the periodic table. It was all worth it just to see that smile again.

After a couple of years my dietary additive got reduced to something called Vitalizer Gold (a series of pills wrapped in foil, that are bio-optimized nutrients clinically proven to create a foundation for a longer, healthier life). I also take a syrup called Vivix which is a resveratrol based cellular anti-aging tonic. Oddly enough since taking both of these products daily for the last 7 months for the Vivix and 12 months for the Vitalizer, I have not had a sore throat, or any other sickness. Could the herbal event in China been a foretelling of the path to happiness. Beats me. All I know is I would walk across burning coals to see a smile on my loves face. I also know that I have not been sick in a very long time and have maintained my thirty pound weight loss.

My brother and I lost touch. Out of curiosity I called him and told him that I was taking these Shaklee dietary supplements. And he told me that according to his research, this was good stuff. We talked for several hours and caught up with our lives.

So as a result of dietary supplements, I have the love of my life, and have reestablished the relationship with my brother. I also have great health. I guess we are what we eat!
