Eco-Focused℠ Features: Beware the Green & Misleading Product Names
Beware the Green in the names of products. The grass isn’t always greener on the other side, unless maybe it has been treated with ammonia sulfate. In that case, you would be wise to wear a respirator and body suit if you decide to go over there and roll around in it! ;) Moving right along, Eco-Focused℠ found the the cleanest, greenest sounding products may contain Butyl Cellosolve (2-butoxyethanol) which can cause irritation and tissue damage from inhalation. Names like: Simple Green Carpet cleaner, Simple Green Lemon Scented All Purpose Wipes, Aroma Clean by Simple Green Specialized Cleaner Degreaser. How about the fresh scent of rain in Rain X and several of their products? Like the products above, beware of the Butyl Cellosolve! If you search the National Institute of Health Household Products Database (as described on the Indoor Ecology Eco-Focused℠ page), this government site will show hundreds well known products:
Household & Personal Care Products Ingredients Database
Butyl Cellosolve may be found in: All-purpose cleaners Cleaning wipes Degreasers Floor polish Rug shampoos Toilet bowl cleaners Tub and tile cleaners Window cleaners See the Toxnet for the toxicity area that has the HSDB or Hazardous Substance Database. It has 54 entries for Butyl Cellosolve. You will also find hundreds of well known products that contain Sodium Hydroxide. Some brands have words like “fresh” and “free” in their names. Results of the Sodium Hydroxide search: There is a Spray & Wash product, a Dawn product, a Cascade product, a Woolite product, several Clorox products, Tide Free, a Colgate tooth paste product, and Dove Body Wash. I am sorry to say the list goes on and on so please be careful when shopping for household cleaning products and personal care products. Sodium Hydroxide can cause liver and kidney damage. Inhalation is immediately irritating to the respiratory tract. Contact can cause severe damage to the eyes, skin, mouth, and throat. Sodium Hydroxide may be found in: Dishwashing liquids Laundry products Oven cleaner Scouring cleansers Tub and tile cleaners Ask not, “What is in the name?” but, “What is in the product?”! Jez, I’m still reeling from the Formaldehyde in Gerber Baby Wash information.
